When a large amount of force is required to operate a valve, such as the main steam system valves, hydraulic actuators are the preferred choice. Unlike pneumatic actuators, the high-pressure mineral oil that drives hydraulic actuators can’t be compressed. Therefore, they can hold force and torque constant without the pump supplying more fluid or pressure.
Hydraulic actuators are well suited to high force applications as they can produce forces 25 times greater than pneumatic cylinders of equal size. They also operate in pressures of up to 4,000 psi.
In corrosive atmospheres, hydraulic fluids offer a high degree of corrosion protection in the actuator cylinder in comparison to air and gas.
